To say that Chai is angry is an understatement.
I wake up the following morning to the sound of a hushed argument and come down to find Sarroch and Chai standing off in my living room. Their voices are low and harsh, and Chaiâs fists are clenched.
The moment he sees me, he snaps out of it, smiling and turning relaxed. âMorning princess.â
âHaving words with Sarroch?â
âSeemed necessary, given the situation,â he replies. Sarrochâs expression darkens, but he doesnât protest. Chai gives him a cool look. âIâll take it from here. I think thatâs for the best.â
Sarrochâs jaw clenches briefly, then he nods. Canât be easy for a Mayak to be given a dressing down by a Touched. Good for Chai, that he got to give it.
âIâll be in touch as soon as I have any news,â Sarroch tells me.
I nod. Sarroch glances back at Chai. âBe on the lookout. I doubt Yue will come back here, but she will try again.â He hesitates. âAnd donât be too proud to call for help. Yue is powerful.â
And then heâs gone.
Chai turns to me. âApi, Iâm so relieved youâre okay. When Sarroch called to tell meâ¦â His voice catches.
I get to the bottom of the stairs and give him a stiff, awkward hug as I try not to move my neck. âWhat were you saying about me making better choices regarding men?â
âI take it all back.â Chai takes a step back and examines me critically. âYou no longer have my blessing to make any kind of choice. Or even be mildly attracted to anyone. No dating for you, no flirting, nothing. I donât know how you do it, Apiya, but your love life makes mine look like a roaring success.â
âIâm not sure we can call this my love life. That involves something happening between both people in question, and Sarroch made it amply clear that wonât ever happen.â
âSo much the better. The less there is between the two of you, the better. Iâm staying here tonight, by the way. Sleeping on your sofa. No, you donât get a say in it.â
I smile. âI wasnât going to protest. I have a feeling that I wonât be sleeping great for the next few days, so company will be welcome.â
Chaiâs expression turns angry again. âI canât believe he letâ¦No, no, this will achieve nothing.â He takes a breath. âMr Sangong is going to be at the initial meeting with Sarroch and he will come by later to tweak the security spells on your house.â
âI should probably also tell Ilmu what happened.â
âI told her already. Sent her a message.â
âOh. And?â
âNo reply.â
I frown. âThatâs odd. I mean, Ilmu isnât exactly the warmest of people, but Iâd have expected her to be at least a bit worried.â
Before Chai replies, Tim calls out from the kitchen. âSomeone come open the cold water tap for me.â
âThereâs a water bowl on the floor, Tim.â
âYou expect me to drink from Hunterâs bowl?â
âYouâre a cat.â Iâd love to say I was pointing out the obvious, but with felines, nothing is certain.
